Sea

Yes it has been a while.
I have been growing a baby boy in my belly.  I went through a rough first trimester, with non-stop morning sickness, which was the main cause of my silence, in addition to a busy holiday season for my company, and making tons of art, and taking care of my sweet Shine.  It feels good to be unplugged from the internet, especially from the blog world, so I just might continue to do just that for a while longer, or maybe not, who knows.  Keeping my world more private also feels really good. That started once I became a mom and I think it's the right thing for me.  I will mostly be using this space to collect and gather things that inspire me.
We are all wonderful and looking forward to our new addition.
Peace.

Moonshiner

Let me eat when I am hungry,
Let me drink when I am dry,
A dollar when I am hard up,
Religion when I die,
The whole world's a bottle,
And life's but a dram,
When the bottle gets empty,
It sure ain't worth a damn.

Dylan covered this song in '63 and it still gives me the chills when I hear it.

My Siren

I was back in New York last week for several days (without Shine!) and got to see all the shows I've been dreaming about.  Kusama at the Whitney, Tomas Saraceno at the Met, and great exhibitions at the New Museum and MOMA.  It was super dreamy.

Love in Interstellar Space

Here's a look at all that I have been up to for the past year.  I still have many many more pieces to add to this series, and I plan on making super large scale pieces, which just may take me the better part of the next ten years.  Each piece takes a few months to complete, and these are the small ones.  (I have 11 so far.)  Here's the first sculpture.

LOVE IN INTERSTELLAR SPACE

In 1977, NASA launched two Voyager spacecrafts into the solar system for the purposes of studying Jupiter and Saturn. One of those crafts gave us a classic image of earth from afar--“a pale blue dot” as famously described by the scientist and educator, Dr. Carl Sagan. Both Voyagers contain the Golden Record, an actual phonographic recording, intended for any extraterrestrial life form that may one day intercept the craft. The Golden Record contains images and various sounds from Earth, including music, greetings spoken in 55 languages, and sound bytes from earthly nature. Both Voyagers are still intact and nearing the boundary of our solar system.

My current body of work was inspired by one particular track on the Golden Record. Ann Druyan, the creative director of the project, and Dr. Carl Sagan, fell in love while working on the Golden Record. They eventually married, and were together until his death in 1996. Included on the Golden Record is a recording of Ann’s actual brain waves, which were made in the early days when she was falling in love with Dr. Carl Sagan.

“…I had asked Carl whether or not it would be possible to compress the impulses in one’s brain and nervous system into sound, and then put that sound on the record, and then think that perhaps the extraterrestrials of the future would be able to reconstitute that data into thought. And he looked at me in - a beautiful May day in New York City, and said well, you know, why don’t you go do it…because who knows…who knows what’s possible in a thousand-million years?”

This series, which includes canvases, sculptures and jewelry, is a visual representation of Anne’s brain waves made tangible--pulsing with love, heading for what Sagan described as the “great wide open sea of interstellar space.” The embroidered canvases portray the brain sounds as they might appear in the vacuum of space. The embroidered wooden sculptures and jewelry are a portrayal of how these sound bytes might appear when they reach undiscovered planets and become embedded in solid surfaces, evolving into new life forms.
